In a short and excellent book, How To Give Away Your Faith, by Dr. Paul Little, I came across something quite interesting. Little briefly discusses a very interesting idea that psychologist Paul Tournier put forward. My quote is below.
“In his helpful and penetrating book, The Meaning of Persons, Dr. Paul Tournier comments on the disparity between what we are inside and what we appear to be to other people. He calls this disparity the difference between the person and the personage. Under most circumstances our degree of mental health will be greater if what we appear to be closely approaches what we actually are. The further apart our person and our personages are, the greater will be our problem in mental health, for a part of our lives will be a lie.”
I will have to dig up his work some day and read more.
