Isaiah 7:9 ~ Ahaz’s Call To Faith – CB2 & Think About Later…

In Isaiah 8, we have a story where King Ahaz is under attack by two other Kings – King Rezin of Aram and King Pekah of Israel.  We are told that “the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.”cb

Amidst all this God tells Ahaz and his people not to lose heart because He [God] is greater than these “smoldering stubs of firewood” or as one commentator put it “two burnt out  cigarette butts”.  God tells them that nothing will happen and that their plotting will fail. However interestingly enough, God also says this to Ahaz and his his people:

9 The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand firm in your faith,
you will not stand at all.’”

I think this is worth thinking about. Here are how some other versions handle this:

ESV: “… If you are not firm in faith,  you will not be firm at all.”

The NET Bible: “… If your faith does not remain firm, then you will not remain secure.”
